Our style is defined by the way in which we do thing, the music we like, the way we express ourselves, our political views, and the clothes we wear. Our style defines our identity.
Groups or subcultures are often formed by people that have the same style. If a person chooses a certain type of fashion, our society begins to categorize them. For instance, if a person wears professional, business clothes he will usually have a more corporate lifestyle. However, when one wears tattered, loose clothing he can be said to be more relaxed, and carefree. Some people are not bothered by this, but others refuse to conform and purposely avoid being part of a subgroup. One subculture that avoids conformity is the hipsters. While hipsters are commonly recognizable by their image and clothing, the also have a unique lifestyle. Much like fashion, hipsters have a broad history that is surprising to most. The original hipsters are nothing like the modern hipsters that exist in our society today. What once was an exclusive group is now a large part of popular culture. However, unlike the popular culture that is filled with labels of different groups, hipsters hate being called “hipsters” (Alfrey). Because the hipster subculture has evolved so much over time and become mainstream, hipsters dislike being labeled by their lifestyle.
