Hipsters do not like the labels of popular culture, and by refusing to wear them, they show they are rejecting the mainstream. Labels are used to put people into stereotypes or groups and are often used to categorize popular culture. If you think of a stereotype or a popular cultural group, such as nerds, you picture intelligent males with button down shirts and glasses. You think of all the people of this group as sharing beliefs, attitudes, and looks. One hipster man said, “The minute you start identifying with a subculture... you kind of lose individuality, surrender part of your identity, and we don't wanna do that” (Wise). Being labeled as a hipster is seen as a negative thing because it gives them an identity within the society, which is exactly what hipsters do not want. Since much of our society is full of want to be hipsters, people often associate “hipsters” with an “image of cool individuality, but lack [of] authenticity” (Weeks). This is one reason why authentic hipsters detest want to be hipster and don’t want to be labeled as a hipster. They don’t want to be seen as a “fake”. Most hipsters do not want to be associated with a phony group. Labels also suggest that all hipsters are the same, stripping them of their individuality and uniqueness, which is the ultimate goal of being hipster.
